Which zoom lens? A or DA

I need a new zoom....and am on a budget. I have two choices (I already have a Sigma 70-300, but it goes in for warranty repairs for up to a month, and I need a 'fill-in').

A brand spanking new DA 50-200mm (about $400 in AUS)

A very good condition used SMC Pentax A 70-210 with the fixed f4 aperture (recently called "legendary" by an eBay seller - it went for $255 AUS plus postage. The local camera store's price is $299 AUS....but maybe I can beat them down, and there is no postage cost).

The DA is new, and undoubtedly lighter and and more convenient, and purpose designed for my K10D.

The A is built like a bloody tank and is almost all metal, but might be sharper. Stans gives it a great write-up..but I get the sneaking suspicion that Stan's Pentax Photography is pretty old, and relates to film SLR cameras and not digital SLRs.

Any suggestions?

you should check the lens review database here. Much more recent reviews:https://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/showproduct.php?product=102&cat=42

As for the DA, it`s a very good lens and several members have posted excellent results with that lens. I like mine and sold my MF Vivitar Series 1 after getting it. AF is always a nice feature to have and the image quality of the Da is very good. Plus it`s much lighter and an easier lens to hand hold steady. The quick shift is a nice feature as well allowing you to manually focus while still in the AF mode.

Cheapest place for this lens is Diamonds, $389 ($50 cheaper than Teds IIRC) without haggling. City or Marion centre. I bought one there then managed to return it thanks to having purchased the K10D and 16-45 there when I found the Sigma 70-200.

Thanks, SupremeMoFo,

Tried Diamonds this afternoon, and the manager quoted me aboiut $400. I can also get it at Photographic Wholesalers (Hutt street) for less even though it's part of Diamonds. I know I can beat them down at Diamonds as I have spent about $3,500 there in the past 12 months. I'll prolly go for the SMC A 70-210 based on price. Then I'm saving for the new 50-125 IF at about $1,500. Never knew you were in Adelaide. :-)
