There are tons of threads on this subject. The consensus is that the 55-300 is a better lens.

The question is why do you now want a 70-300 when you have consciously gotten rid of a 55-300? What do you want out of a telephoto lens?

i was getting frustrated with the dslr learning curve and considered going back to point and shoot. at the time, i had a k10 and kx 2 kit lens. i sold the kx kit and regret the decision.

now i'm looking to get my reach back. i'd love to cowboy up for a 2.8 70-200 but with a child on the way i probably shouldn't spend the coin. with ski season now here, i'd like to have a telephoto.

Just get yourself the 55-300 back again.
It's definitely worth it.
If you want something a little more responsive than the K10D, you might as well sell that and go for another K-x, no?
Cheap, but definitely a good combination.

Then the 55-300 should be within your financial reach.
