Yeah for something like this, the 50 1.7 should do fine. I think you would notice a real jump in quality with the 43 or 40 for pictures of individuals (w.r.t. background rendering). The 50mm is plenty sharp for this sort of thing and you are going to have a pretty large DOF.

If the 50mm fails miserably, only then would I suggest throwing money at the problem .
