My local camera store has a 50mm 1.7 that's is taken off a K1000 for $50, hows that deal wise? Ebay seems to be at best $10-$15 cheaper but this i can have today an look at before I buy. Supposedly it is in perfect condition so thats a plus.

So I ended up getting an SMC Pentax-M 1:1.7 50mm for $50. It is Asahi Opt brand. The store also had a 50mm 2.0 in the A version for auto metering. He recomendded the 2.0 because of the full use of metering and flash. My plan with this lens is to mostly use it wide open (1.7) so I figured I'd just use Av mode and be fine. Would the 50mm 2.0 A be a better buy than the 1.7 M?

For what its worth I think you made a good choice. I'm new to Pentax and dSLRs too and one of the deciding facts for me is the ability to use old glass with Pentax. The Comprehensive Pentax Lens Listings - Pentax Lens Review Database section is an absolutely terrific resource in my opinion. Searching through the SLR Lens Discussion is great but that one review section is worth the price of admission here for me. The reviews indicate that the 1.7s are much better across a big number of dimensions over the 2s.

Congratulations on your purchase.

I may just hold out for a K mount 50mm 1.7 or 1.4. The main reason why I chose Pentax over Canon, Nikon, Sony etc.. was because of availability of cheap fast glass. I have to say, the K-x's ergonomics outdo the T2i and the lower end Nikons I've held in store.
Try to find a K 55 1.8 as well, it's a very nice lens, the same price as the 50 1.7, and it's worth owning both IMHO (or you could sell the one you like less ).

You chose well with the 1.7, it's a better lens than the 2.0.

+1 on the 55/1.8 - I'm finding I like it better than my 50/1.4.

Been shooting all afternoon with the 1.7 and it looks awesome. As I said above, 99% of use with this lens will be at 1.7 so using in Av has worked perfectly. And while the focus confirmation isn't perfect it works decently and was an added perk I didn't know existed. If I need small aperture and a fast shutter I'm gonna just slap on the kit lens which is fine for me and what I need the camera for.

Don't be afraid to stop that 50 down, you will find it much sharper than the kit .

Shoot in M mode and you have full control. If your camera has a 'green button', use that to get an initial shutterspeed for the selected aperture; after that you can fine tune. If not, use DOF preview lever to close the aperture and adjust the shutterspeed till the exposure reading in the viewfinder is what you want.
