Value of the FA 50mm 1.4, over an old 50mm 1.7?

Hello everyone, thanks for tolerating yet another question .

I was just wondering what you folks thought about the value of the FA 50mm 1.4 versus the various 50mm 1.7 lenses. I have read many comparisons regarding sharpness at various apertures etc., but the fact that the 50mm 1.7's can be had for 50 dollars really throws a wrench into the works doesn't it?

So here are my two questions:

Would the half-stop difference between 1.7 and 1.4 really allow you to get that many more pictures in low light... in a practical sense?

Is there a good chance that the cost of the FA 50 1.4 will skyrocket in the next few years, and therefore, would it be worth buying for that reason alone?

My 50 and 55 have been stunning performers for their price tags, and I often don't shoot them wide open for IQ sake, so it got me wondering what you folks thought of the value of each lens... and whether the FA 50 1.4 would be a good "investment". The AF of the 50 1.4 would be nice, but I also don't see it being super useful in low light... any experience to confirm or deny this assumption?

PS -

How cool would a cheaper 50mm 1.4 for ASP-C only be?

I have a M 50 f1.7 and FA 50 f1.4 so here ya go......

1. Not really, at least not for me. Bokeh seems a better reason than half a stop for low light.

2. It might go up but I wouldn't anticipate a big increase will happen soon....the new price is already up there. Lots of used available anyways.

3. I find the AF is more useful in low light situations than in good light. Maybe due to my astigmatism having more influence in low light. AF assist light on the body would help the lens even more (I don't have one but used it a lot on Nikon).

4/ps. It probably would be an underperformer to be cheaper than a used FA 50 1.4

What various 50 1.7 lenses?

There's a very real reason why we have total MANIACS here who own more than 20 lenses in the 50-ish category. I only own 3, so I have nothing to do with these other LUNATICS who insist on buying more and more 50-ish lenses.

But I can tell you this:

No other focal length offers the variety of IQ and intangible qualities of those near 50, since they made so damn many of them back in the day. My Super-Tak 50 1.4 is different than my Super-Tak 55 1.8. And my 58mm F2 Helios 44-2 is WAY different than both of them.

You can never have enough of these faster fifties (albeit the Helios ain't that fast but it doesn't matter). They're all a joy to shoot with compared to longer lengths, and you'll never go wrong or lose money by pulling the trigger on yet another lens in the 50 range, regardless of speed.

And there are people here who argue that the inexpensive Super Takumar F2 is sharper than the 1.4 and 1.8, and maybe they're even right.

Cool, thanks.

I'm very happy with my K55 and A 50 combo... but eventually, I'll fit an AF lens in there. Not for a while... just curious! Some people even suggest the F 50 1.7 over the FA 50 1.4, which I found interesting.

I was under the impression that the optical formula of the M 50 1.7 was pretty much the same all the way up to the F series.

The optical formula of the M, A, F and FA50/1.7 are all the same.

I never went later than the Super Takumar/Super Muliti-Coated Takumar series, all M42 screw mount, so I ignore all of that information.

Hehe. While the quality of the old pentax glass is indisputable, I have a hard time getting used to stop-down metering, let alone screwmount stuff! But it's really nice to know I always have the option.
