f/2.4- 2.8 is fine for portraits but like Ira said lenses are at their sharpest when stopped down a stop or two, and yes this does effect the slower lenses.

Also if your looking to do weddings, having the faster lenses will allow for more artistic shots.
Like this photo for example- i shot at f/1.8 with the FA77 on our wedding day-
