Pentax or Sigma?

I am buying my first lens for my Pentax Kx. I'm trying to decide which lens to purchase while still having all of the correct funtions work on the Pentax. I'm torn between the Pentax DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 ED AL IF Lens and the Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Lens. Any opinions? The only differnce I can really find is the Sigma is cheaper!

I have purchased Sigma lenses since 1985 and have had no problems. I just bought the Sigma 18-200 (I'll get it Saturday). I avoided the Pentax because of price and because of the good luck I have had with Sigma. I have the Sigma 150-500 and it is an awesome piece of glass.

My recommendation is Sigma, but I am no pro.

The Pentax DA18-250mm and its sibbling Tamron 18-250mm are now discontinued. They can only be purchased second-hand or from older stocks.

The Sigma 18-250mm OS HSM received some good user comments in some threads, but the OS is redundant with the camera IS. You will need to switch either the lens OS or the camera IS as they cannot work together.

Some good quality Tamron 18-250mm/Pentax DA18-250mm were seen recently around US$400 on the marketplace of this forum. I do not know for the Sigma but it is true that it can be purchased new with ful warranty.

In terms of IQ, the Tamron 18-250mm/Pentax DA18-250mm is well liked in variousreviews incl. this forum, www.slrgear.com and www.photozone.de. There are a lesser num be of independent reviews of the Sigma 18-250mm OS HSM but http://www.************* and Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM Lens, digital cameras, digital photography, photography, digital slr, camera recommendation, price comparison, photographic companies, camera companies, digital camera best prices,.

You wil note in DXOMark (DxOMark - Welcome to DxOMark) a lesser score from DXO Labs for the Sigma compared to the DA18-250mm in terms of overall score:
DA18-250mm = 10
Canon 18-200mm IS = 6
Niikon 18-200mm VR = 7
Sigma 18-250mm HSM OS = 8

I hope that the comment will help...

Oh goody! I just bit the bullet and purchased the 150-500 yesterday, on the promise of a pretty good tax return. Waiting for delivery at the moment. This would have to be the first SERIOUS consideration of a lens I've made prior to purchase - I've always been quite impulsive in the past - and it's been hard to find a review of the 150-500 that convinces me that I haven't bypassed a better option. I settled on this one simply because nothing else has jumped out at me as a matching option for the price range.

fccwpe, I'd be glad to hear any specific pros and cons you've encountered with this model.

Emily, I have the Sigma 18-25 IS HSM lens. I am completely satisfied with it. I like having the image stabilized in the viewfinder and the lens has better IQ than I expected it to have.

Everything will work with the Sigma, but if you create an exif data list using the Pentax software, the lens name will show as "---". I just replace that with the lens name, in my case the 18-50.

I'm happy with mine. The serial number is in a range that "may" have an HSM issue (known as "death") but mine is going fine.

Here are some airshow shots:

Lens. The tax return was promised, so out came the credit card.

Nice shots, SpecialK. Now I'm excited.

My 150-500 arrived yesterday. I underestimated its size to some extent - Before it arrived, I was thinking I might need to take a couple of lenses out to make it fit in my sling-bag. HAHA! Let's just say if I was compensating for something, I'd be truly satisfied!
