DA* Zoom Lens Quality Question

Just getting into Pentax after being a long time Canon & Nikon user. Am impressed so far but need to 'calibrate' my expectations on Pentax quality. I've sent back one DA* 16-50mm because of a focus problem: would heavily back focus at the wide end only and using the AF adjust would only make it (heavily) front focus at 50mm.

The replacement I have now seems okay for focus, but the image shifts left and right when changing zoom direction - shifts a lot! Especially noticeable from 35-50mm, and I've never seen this in a zoom lens before. The other 16-50mm did not do this (checked before it was returned). And the kit 18-55mm is fine with no shift.

Should not affect still photos unless it loosens up over time - which is really my main concern - and I want to deal with it now rather than later. (Also looks quite annoying when using video...).

Can other DA* owners check to see they have this shift? Just zoom one direction then note when you change zoom direction does the image shift left/right?

Not saying it's an issue. And I'm very happy with the DA Limited primes and K5. Trying to understand what are normal characteristics for a Pentax zoom. Canon drove me crazy with focus issues from lens to lens; some great, some not.

RK

With my DA*16-50mm image doesn't shift at all.

You should send your copy back, again :s

Never had any focus/shift problems with that lens. It's the best I own and use. Send it back though. This shift problem is one I've never seen anyone describe or post on. It's got to be rare.

First I've heard also - the 16-50 should be rock solid in this regard.
All the best for the repair/replacement.

16-50mm zoom gets a bit stuck

Hi, regarding bad copies of the da* 16-50mm, just got mine, and the zoom gets gritty at about 28mm focal length, much more evident when going from high to low focal lengths. Is this a bad copy, or common for this lens.

@ajperumbeti: You've got a bad copy. My 16-50 is completely smooth throughout the zoom range.

Because of the design there should be a hiccup at 28mm. 16-28 range should be smooth and easy, 28-50 should be smooth but be a little harder to turn. It gets worse if you point the lens up. It shouldn't be "gritty", but you should feel the transition

Not so sure about any 'hiccup' - perhaps more like a smooth transition between easy turning and more firm tightness to the zoom ring. The motion should be seamless through the 28mm mark.
