500mm f/1.8 ? Seriously?!

PENTAX K MOUNT 500mm f1.8 Telephoto Lens L@@K - (eBay item 160161041291 end time Sep-30-07 15:59:40 PDT)

f/1.8? 500mm? That makes for a pretty darn big aperture opening. Is it 'real'? I gotta assume it doesn't do great on Digital tho not having coating, producing a lot of CA and flaring .... ?

It's probably a 1:8 or F8 lens by the look of it...

I'll second the f/8.

A lot of people who aren't familiar with lenses often make this mistake, such as listing a 50mm 1:2 as a f/1.2.

Plus for the ratio to be physically feasible the front element would probably be the size of a manhole cover - and as heavy.

It looks identical to a Quantaray 500 f/8 that I've got, minus the cool pistol grip with cable-release trigger. It's a pretty crappy lens, slow, and full manual (doesn't even have an automatic aperture, you have to focus with the aperture open, then close it down to meter). btw, my lens came with a 2x doubler that made it a 1000mm lens.

It looks the same as my Phoenix 500mm F8 as well.

They're alright for the money, around $100.00 new but I rarely use mine for a reason.
They're too slow, and not the best image quality.

On the other hand, it's extremely lightweight, so I wouldn't be surprised if I use it more during the winter when I'm trying to conserve the weight of my pack more.

I wonder if that 2x is as lousy as the one with the Phoenix lens.
They'll mess up any shot, and almost doubles the price of the lens.

200, not 100. 200-500 f2.8. Totally impractical, I think it was 18kg.

Seriously, if it was a f/1.8, the front element would have to be AT LEAST 278mm in diameter. Have you ever seen a Nikon/Canon 200mm f/1.8? That is HUGE! Heck, a 500mm f/4 is huge....My mind hurts just trying to comprehend a 500mm f/1.8

I thought: let's be original and think this IS a 500mm/F1:1.8. But you would end up disappointed. So i'll be honest: I would not buy this lens. I have a 400mm/F5.9 that I never use. Too big for its performance. That will be only worse on F/8

If it's the same as mine then it's not a mirror. I havn't shot with mine for two or three years now... Maybe I should pull it out and test it on the K10 shooting the full moon.....

I've taken a fair share of spectacularly ordinary and uninspiring pix w/my 300mm f/2.8 too; not all are like what I share in my Tanzania thread I hold so dear. So I don't mean to insult if anyone has or particularly loves one similar. Just not too jazzed seeing those examples. I like more color and contrast.

I bet it would do better on a tripod, given the exposure times you'd want stopped down from f/8? I can't imagine that pistol grip does a great job. (does it?)

Sorry all for my ignorance in my OP; it all makes sense. I figured the glass had to be too small. I know f/x is represented that way because it is a ratio, but didn't think it through enough to consider what size of glass was required.
