Replace Sigma 100-300mm f4.5-5.6

Hi to the forum,
Was taking some pics yesterday in the snow we have here, and I was using my tele zoom, a Sigma 100-300 f4.5-6.7 lens. Pics were taken towards the 300 end, and really weren't hugely sharp. Body is a K-x, shake reduction is on. The pics are, i must point out, cropped.

2010 December snow 047 from Brianp on Pixie Photo Sharing!

Is that a reasonable level of sharpness, or am I expecting too much?

So I was wondering, what would you folks recommend to replace that lens? Something reasonably priced, or s/h would be preferable, but I would like more sharpness!

Thanks!

Brian.

The same lens, but the constant f/4 version. You'll have to find one used unless somebody has some old stock (don't count on that). Very sharp, very fast AF, plays well with Sigma TC's, you'd love it. Also, the DA* 300 (if you really only need the long end) is excellent. If you're trying for something cheaper, the DA 55-300 is quite popular. Not quite as sharp as the other 2, but an absolute bargain.

Sigma APO 100-300mm F4

I've been eyeing various 100-300mm zooms lately. I would like to get one I can use on my dSLR K7 and on my MF film SLRs (like my K2).

The FA 100-300 (silver) is intriging, but the Sigma APO 100-300mm F4 sounds like a better lens overall.

[Finally his question, whew!]

Is the Sigma APO 100-300mm F4 K1000-SE, MX, K2 compatible?
In the Amazon description, the lens is said to be dSLR and film SLR compatible.

"This fast telephoto zoom lens maintains a large f/4 aperture at all focal lengths, providing excellent optical performance for Digital SLR cameras and film SLR cameras."

Is it really?

Thanks,

Yes, it is a DG lens. That's Sigma-speak for full-frame. I don't know if the AF works as I don't have any experience with film cameras, but if you don't know I'm sure there are plenty here that do.

Either the DA L 55-300mm or the Sigma 100-300mm f4. The DA L is relatively inexpensive $220 and the Sigma is around $1k. You could spend $50-100 for a Tamron 60-300mm adaptall MF lens with adapter and get much better IQ than your current lens.
