I own a sigma 17-70. For Xmas I'm going to replace it with a pentax 16-50.

Reasons are:
Zoom ring will turn in right direction
IQ
Aperture
Quick shift
WR for when I get a k5

It would depend on what other lenses I had, and who's buying. If you already have something wider than 16, then the 17-70. If the 16-50 would be your widest lens, then that one.

The 16-50 is a * lens and is weather sealed. It's also constant aperture at f2.8. It's just a better lens all around.

If you shoot outdoor, I would choose a weather resistance lens anytime (if budget is not an issue).

However the Sigma has more reach at the long end (70mm versus 50mm). Do you need that reach?

Lastly the Users' reviews indicate the following ratings that are always useful to look at:
SMC Pentax-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL [IF] SDM
Rating =8.68 50 reviews
Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO (AF Lens)
Rating = 8.35 4 reviews

Food for thoughts...
