55-300mm compatibility

I was reading that this lense has no internal motor and I guess it will not work on the K5 is this the truth? Pentax 55-300 for my K5, thank you. Give it all you got for your opinion on it.

edit: to add some info.

Works with screw-drive. K5 can focus it fine.

I'm assuming you are talking about the Pentax 55-300? It certainly does work on the K-5.

Lenses with no internal motor have screwdrives and will work with all Pentax AF bodies. (KAF2 mount)

Some lenses have both an internal motor and the screwdrive. Again, it will work with all Pentax AF bodies. (KAF2 mount)

However, a select few lenses are branded as "SDM-only or DC-only" and have an internal motor, but do not have a screwdrive. They can only autofocus with modern Pentax DSLRs, generally including any body released after the K100D. (KAF3 mount)

A few examples of KAF3 lenses include the Pentax 17-70mm, * 55mm, and 18-135mm. All KAF2 lenses should be able to autofocus on all bodies- so your 55-300 will be kosher with the K-5

Thank you gentlemen for the quick reply. Now I can sleep tonight and not worry about it as it will be here Tuesday. I see nothing but good reviews on it for the price as an intermediate lense.

Nikon does this craziness, not Pentax. For the life of me I can't the logic behind crippling lower end bodies so they can't use screw driven lenses, it's a huge minus when it comes for purchasing decisions. It was the deciding factor for why I bought a K-x rather than a D5000.

I hope that you enjoy your 55-300 as much as I enjoy mine. It appears to be a fine performer and I agree with the reviews. I probably should provide a review myself; however, I've little to actually compare it to. Very happy, though. Money well spent.

Sleep tight!
