SMC 70-210/4 or SMC F 70-210/4-5.6

Of these two lenses, which do you think is optically the best or are they pretty equal. Thanks, Don

I have used the F70-210/4-5,6 for more than ten years on film, while a friend of mine had the A70-210/4.

The manual lens was big and very well built, opposed to the autofocus one, very cheap, very loose on manual focusing, and also ugly in the multicolour fonts for the focusing distance. Optically, it was the reverse: the quality of the A manual lens was pretty average, while the autofocus lens was brilliant and vibrant, with great rendition on colours and great details. It was also exceptionally good in macro coupled with Nikon close up two elements add-on lenses.

I also know for having read it on the italian Pentax forum tfrom reliable posters that the F is great on digital, a little better than the 50-200DA.

I have the F 70-210mm and the images it produces are exceptional. Most of the pics I took under the 'insects and butterflies' here Picasa Web Albums - Paul Benjamin are with this lens.

thanks

I used to own both, both are excellent lenses. That said, IMHO, 'A' might be better optically than 'F', constant f4, has 1:4 macro, and very smooth manual focus. However, it is heavier and most of them will develop zoom creep sooner or later.

'F', even though might not be as good as 'A' optically, the difference isn't that big. 'F' is better than DA 50-200 in the out-of-focus rendering. 'F' is lighter than 'A' (but still quite heavy when compared to the DA) but the manual focus ring is very narrow.

So it really depends on you. If you like manual focus, don't mind the weight and the image quality is important, 'A' is definitely the way to go. Otherwise go with either 'F' or DA 50-200.

cheers
Kenny
