For all intents and purposes, they are pretty much identical. I believe the FA has a little chip inside that "optimizes" the lens for programmed bodies (I notice that AWB is more accurate) but it is a minor thing.

They are both... plasticy

I would buy the less expensive option.

The F 50mm 1.4 at 1.4 is already very sharp.
The pores are visible.
It is so sharp that it doesn't have that soft (flattering) effects for portraits even wide open.

Not sure of the FA version though

It's interesting. The F50/1.4 is much less common than the FA50/1.4. It has the same optical formula and same aperture. It sells for a lot more and has a reputation for being better. Some attribute this to a different SMC coating, which is visibly different.

The FA50/1.7 is much less common than the F50/1.7. It has the same optical formula and same aperture. It sells for a lot more and has a reputation for being better. The coatings are again visibly different.

I was too cheap to chase either of the rare versions, so I don't have any personal experience. If I was selling one, I would try to get more for it. But it sure seems like the reputation is related more to rarity than quality.

I have both, and can't see any difference whatsoever in image quality. They are absolutely equal for any purpose. But the F has a bigger snob factor... and looks better...
