i tried the new sigma 17-50 today....very nice...very quiet ..very sharp......very much want it..:}

the Focus ring locked up if you enabled the AF switch on the lens body..is that normal?

all my other lens can be focused manually even in AF..

it's called quick-shift. obviously, the 17-50 doesn't have it.

So does the Tamron (sort of) .... just flip to Manual on your camera body, does the same job as on the lense and it's just as quick !

jewelltrail:Yes, those are my findings with it too. More surprising, it does not hunt for focus--not in very low light--though it surely finds focus more slowly in dimness. I guess I could make it hunt if I tried, but in applications I use, some of which are low light, hunting is non-existent. This is, IMHO, one of the best kept secrets of the lens: it has always stumped me that others do not comment on it.

Last night tried the lens in dim light--I did get some hunting.

It is the older version I believe--the newer, VC lens, is not out in Pentax mount. I also believe the older version is considered better.

There are some early reviews coming in for the Sigma 17-50 on the other mounts over @ the F Miranda sight--they are very mixed. See, for example:

My one does that, so yes, I would assume that it is normal.

As JT said this is the original version as there is no Pentax OS version.

I got my Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 from B&H about ten days ago with $45 rebate. Very good service, it arrived in two days, free shipping, from NY to Delaware.

I am not an expert but I think the focus is OK. The two pictures of Christmas tree ornaments were hand-held with only afternoon sunlight through window, no tree lights.

The teapot was f/4, 1/60, ISO 100, Santa taking a driving tour of the tree was f/2.8, 1/60, ISO 100. I focused on the flower on the teapot and the Santa's eyes.

santa was shot at 100 iso at 1/160 F5.6 50mm

the flower again at 100 iso at 1/400 F5.6 50mm

both crops are 100%

I know santas beard is blown out..but harsh midday sun will do that to the big fella

Santa shot looks spot on, the other shot may be a tad FF, though is tough to tell
@ these sizes for certain. Also, what you are asking it to do, to shoot through all those pine branches & find focus upon that ornament is asking a lot IMHO.

could you show more sample images taken by this lens? if it's possible, you could take some better ones with better subject?

anyhow, the bokeh looks great.

I am hesitant to judge bokeh of a lens based on these 2 samples. There is no way to know the distance between the subject and the background (unless poster tells us). In order to test bokeh to any degree, not only does the subject need things in immediate background (as implied already) but, things. for example, like tree branches and bright lights need to occupy background to give you an idea of the lens' ability to render (or not render) beautiful bokeh. Often I see someone comment on a lens' beautiful bokeh in an image, only to see the same lens fail miserably in a different image. One must keep the whole picture in mind while judging bokeh. You can make a lens with bad bokeh look as if it has beautiful bokeh without much trouble--it is all in the image you select to shoot.

That said, Tommot1965, can you please post some more samples for us, whenever time allows? Thanks.

There is no doubt this is a very sharp lens though.

the lens was at 50 mm..no cropping and straight off the camera in Jpeg .. Santa was about 5 feet away..the flower was about a foot away..mind you its a tiny flower about 20 mm diameter .....both at 5.6

the OS works great..better than the SR I feel. easy hand-held at 50 mm 1/15 no shake....HSM is noise free, you can hardly hear it..and its so fast its almost instant focusing it takes about 1.5 secs from macro to Infinity and back again.....its by far the best lens ive had yet...mind you ive not had many...LOL
