Good summary! But then again, the lady says that it is out of her budget. So there is no lens that live up to all of this.
I have to agree with you (and the post you quoted, as well).

In the exact same boat right now, I keep coming back to the 55-300 despite the copy I used at my local place couldn't focus right :ugh:

Having owned the FA 80-320 a decently long time (2 years?), I agree with someone who posted on the last page: It is really unusable over 260-280mm. Whatever the weight figure in the lens database, it was light when mounted on my camera. Any old-ish lens is going to weigh considerably more. The M* and A* 300s may not...but there goes the "cheap" part of the budget. And they're manual focus anyway. Old, cheap, heavy...new, expensive, light.

Unfortunately, there is no lens that meets all the requirements...or I'd have one by now. I'd even skip on the AF if it would make it lighter. I care less about weight than the OP, but...I don't want older lenses because of PF and needing to be stopped down. f/8 + K10D don't go together most of the year.

A compromise is going to have to be made in one criterion or another...or stick with what ya got.

That's it in a nutshell. But I don't want an older manual lenses either. It has to have the ability to AF.
I'm afraid things don't work that way...that's like saying you want a cheap, light, and vibration-free tripod. Pick 2.

You have to compromise something unless you're going to 5 finger discount it...

I'm going to try for the Tamron 70-300 that Frogfish suggested and I can get at KEH. I'll hold onto the Sigma, and if the Tamron isn't better than what I have, I can return it. That's part of the good thing about KEH.

I saw that, but until I get the funds, I can't possibly ask seller to wait that long.

After looking at those shots made by members owning the 70-300mm, it's definitely the one I'll get. Thanks Frogfish, you've been a big help in making my decision.

It is an amazing lens(for the price) and ... it is sharper than the 55-300 at full extention. However. I think its important to point out that the 70-300 Di, and the 70-300 LD Di are not the same lens. In case someone thought that.

The 70-300 in the market is the Di version. Which is still fairly sharp, but has much more CA at higher focal than the LD version. Which is Low dispersion glass(much better CA handling). TBH. If I was in the market for a low cost 300mm zoom. I'd defininately jump on the 70-300 LD Di bandwagon. Even though it is known to have a slow zoom. However, the next step for me will be the new Sigma APO 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG!

And I can't wait to try one on a K-5 in spring with the 1.7x AF TC and live view focusing.

Thanks John, but the two I'm looking at are the Di LD versions.

I'm not aware of a non-LD version of the 70-300. There is a 75-300 that is not LD - are you referring to that maybe?

well, ahh um, I goofed. I had not had the Sigma lens on my camera since taking the dog shot or the bees that were OOF, but connected last week, I noticed my diopter was moved from the position I had it set on. Could be it's not the lens that wasn't sharp but the diopter in the wrong setting. I'll test it this week and let you all know if that was it.

You are smart to hold onto the Sigma until you've tried the Tamron. I've owned several zooms in this range, sometimes the lighter ones are harder to hold steady. By the way I've owned a Promaster, 2 Sigmas, a Tokina 100-300, and a Tamron 75-300. The best was a tie between the Promaster and one of the Sigmas. Slight but a little better, the Tamron was the worst, but the 75-300 is totally different from the 79-300s. As with all, there can be variation from one copy to the next. Good Luck!

Thanks for the input Tom. Depending how much I make on this latest computer repair, I hope to be ordering that Tamron this week. If I don't make as much as what I first anticipated, I'll sock the money in my savings account to fund my K-X buy.
