K-R Which Lenses

I am a little confused about lenses, I see that any pentax lens will work one fashion or another with K-R. Some of them need an adapter. I don't want to get an adapter unless they are dirt cheap. I guess the question is which lenses need an adapter so I can avoid them. Also for the ones that do not need an adapter will all the features of that lens work? Auto aperture, auto focus etc? I saw this lens Pentax SMCP-A 50mm will this work for KR?

Thanks!!
I would not doubt if this question has been asked and answered, I tried searching forums there were a lot of results in my search.

The Takumar line will need an adapter, those are M42 screwmount lenses.
The K-series and M-series will fit your camera, but everything will be manual.
The A-series lenses can meter automatically but will not autofocus, the advantage is that you can use the camera in AV mode.
The F, FA, DA series will have autofocus.

The adapter for M42 lenses is not terribly expensive (US$ 30,95: PentaxWebstore Mount Adapter K(35m m Screwmount to Bayonet). You need only one for any number of lenses. Cheaper 3rd party ones are available but either don't work properly or at least are difficult to remove as opposed to to the genuine one which is pleasure to use in comparison.

adapter

Oh cool, didn't realize it was that cheap. I assume any lens that is used with the adapter would be manual everything correct? I am fine with that, but the wife well...

With M42 lenses M-mode works the best IMO, in theory Av mode kind works too in that it sets the exposure time to match the actual light that enters through the aperture set on the lens, but this tends to be inaccurate, so M-mode with stop down metering (green button) for a starting point is what most people seem to do. M42 lenses are especially manual in that they do not have the K-mount aperture lever and so the body cannot stop them down to the aperture ring setting for you when the shutter operates as it does for lenses having this; this might be inconvenient as fully open aperture is nice for framing and focusing. Most M42 lenses have a switch that helps to make this more convenient, ones without this may require a modification to work at anything than fully open so this is worth checking out before buying a particular lens. The Pentax (Takumar) M42 lenses should all have the switch though AFAIK (?).

'A' lenses are the easiest to use of the non auto focus lenses, because the body can handle the metering directly. Not that stop down metering is that hard. The lens you mention will mount directly without an adapter and should work fine.

I may be able to get this 50mm f:1.7 lens that was for the Vivitar V3800N. I assume it should be fine It uses K mount. I know it will be all manual. Is this a good lens? How does it compare to the Pentax SMCP-A 50mm. I can get the f1.7 for $25
