I'm Still Waiting....

....for a 500mm f/4 or even f/4.5. With the extra speed and the quality of the images of the K5 a 500mm lens would be just the ticket for birding and wildlife. Pretty please?

Put a posting in the marketplace want section. You never know. They come up from time to time. I had to pass on a K mount 500/4.5 within the last year because of no money. The owner was asking C$900.

I've seen a few wonderful examples of an inexpensive 500 mirror lens here that although slower, are nothing to sneeze at.

Can't remember the make for the life of me, but for the cost, wonderful.

In addition, with the high sensitivity of today's sensors, do you really need something that fast anyway? Especially for birding?

What I really want is a DA* 500mm lens, something that will keep up with the AF of a K5. The DA* 300 f/4 is a terrific lens but it's not quite long enough.

No lens is ever long enough nor fast enough for birding.

Unless one is shooting chickens, of course.

Although I prefer decapitation.

For chickens, that is.

Many of my favorite shots are with the DA*300 + F1.7x AF TC =510mm. Slower than you wanted but had great luck with the K20d, now its even better with BIFs and action shots with the improved AF.C on my K-5. Due to the built-in focus limits of the TC its easier to shoot BIFs than without the TC. Missing focus for a second does not cycle all the way to infinity and back causing you to lose sight of the subject.

Good shots Lee! My 1.7x works well with the DA* 50-135 so I'm not too surprised.

I posted some test images with the 50-135 and 1.7x on my Flickr site. I was very pleasantly surprised at the image quality. I now have an 85-230 f/4.8 lens with really good quality. Have a look if you doubt the above post.

What stops you from getting a Sigma 500/4.5?

I guess the OP wants a 500/4 -- or even 500/4.5 -- with silent autofocus, internal focusing and special glass, but the budget is under $600...

Cheers!

Hey, that's not asking too much is it? And don't forget the weather sealing! Actually, you are correct except that I'm willing to pay an amount commensurate with its real cost. Pentax offers real value in the marketplace and their DA* lenses are no exception. To get a DA* 500 at 2/3 to 3/4 the price of the competition would be worth every penny. Now for some DA* TC's please.
