F*300 / 4.5 Is this a good deal ?

I know some people think this is the sharpest 300 in the Pentax stable - so I'm really interested in it (I was also looking at the Tamron 300 / 2.8 which seems to be so sharp that I'm surprised there aren't more accidents just from people looking at shots from it online) !

There is one going here for ca. GBP550 (maybe US$800). However it looks pretty beat up so I'm assuming (before asking the owner of course) that it's a Journo's ex-lense.

What do you think ? Can I get Pentax to restore it ($$$ - expensive ?) , judging from the photos is it worth the money ? Assuming no damage to AF, elements etc. and everything is working ?

It doesn't have the tripod collar either....$800 is WAY too much for that.

As a fellow F* 300/4.5 ED [IF] owner my first question is: where's the tripod collar?

And I don't understand what needs to be restored? Pentax cannot repaint it of course.

Really ? US$800 is too much - I thought these were going for triple digits - double the price of this one ?

Restore - yes, I was hoping maybe Pentax could repaint it.

Tripod collar - I'll have to ask, that's a big problem if he doesn't have it.

IMHO the F* was more expensive than the FA* a while back, before the DA* was available. But today I'd recommend the DA* over the F*. Why wouldn't you want to have weather sealing and sharp optics in a modern package? I doubt the F* is sharper than the DA*.

I've just seen people say that they prefer the F*300 over the FA* or DA*300 (can't remember the full reasoning but I know one of the reasons was they thought it was sharper - even though the DA* is stellar) - and of course the DA* is double this asking price.

I think many prefer the F* because of two factors: the all-metal build and the fact that the hood is built-in, so no chance of losing it. I don't think it has an edge in IQ but I'd happy to be wrong.

The DA* goes for $1200 new. I've seen it for $1000 used.

I may be wrong but thought I'd seen an optical diagram on the F* and FA* and they were the same. It's the cosmetics that differ. As for this lens, the tripod collar would be nearly impossible to replace and the body can't easily be repainted. Those parts would have been painted before the lens was assembled. It would cost a small bundle to repaint.

So the average price on an F* or FA* is under $1000 and closer to $900 much of the time. $800 seems a bit high given the missing collar and the cosmetic condition. I'd offer $700 for this lens and use it as it is without paying for any repairs.

Even if everything were working this thing is a mess. Looks like it has been used as a doorstop. You would have a tough time trying to resell it without the tripod mount. I'd back away from this one in a hurry.

Ok so, there are a few paint chips, so what? If the Optics and mechanics of the lens are still good and the OP doesnt care about the cosmetics, I'd still say go for it, unless he can find a F* 300 in better cosmetic condition, if thats important to the OP. My F* 300 looks like its a T72 tank, I'm pretty sure, it would survive even being used as a doorstop.

You don't really need a tripod mount, in fact I find mine gets in the way. SR is good enough on K10D upwards to make this an eminently hand holdable lens.

As long as my F* 300 is functioning, I dont think I will even consider getting another 300mm, you will have to pry it from my cold dead fingers.
