I could buy a K-x & 18-55 for about the same price as a Canon G12 or Panasonic LX5. Although I have to admit that the K-5 is mighty tempting after seeing some video reviews & seeing what it's capable of on flickr.

I'll check out the kit lens forum.

Coming from P&S it might be more worthwhile to get the K-x and then upgrade to the K-5 (equivalent) in 2-3 yrs if you need the bells and whistles.

Instead of the kit lens you could get a better multi-purpose zoom like the Tamron 17-50 or the Pentax 18-135 (weatherproof and addl zoom). But I would probably stay with the kit lens until you figure out what you want and don't want. Otherwise you could do a lot buying (and subsequent selling) before you figure out what you really want.

You can run the Exposure plot program on your old photos to find out what kind of focal length you usually use. Not surprisingly 80-90% of my photos were in the 37-50mm (35mm eq.) part of my 37-370 Fuji zoom. So I've focused on those focal lengths (and someday wider).
