For me, I don't think going to 50mm is quite long enough. I shoot a lot of portraits so I like the long end of the Tamron 28-75mm. But when not shooting portraits, 28mm isn't wide enough and I suspect the 24-70 would feel similar. I would love a 16-85mm f/2.8 or something similar but it just doesn't exist.

I think the subject matter or shooting style you have will help you decide. The 17-50mm is going to be a better up close/wide angle/landscape/indoor lens while the 24-70 is a better step back/normal/portrait/all around lens.

Ideally, I would split the focal lengths and go with a few prime lenses.

I have both by Sigma:
18-50mm f2.8 EX DC MACRO f2.8 (similar to the Tamron)
and the 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG MACRO (non-HSM)

I don't use the 24-70mm much because of a few reasons:

-24mm, quite often just not wide enough
-tiny zoom ring, not very ergonomic
-large/heavy lens to carry around
-more prone to flare at f2.8 at night than my 18-50mm

I hesitate to sell it since I purchased it used at a decent price and
is does perform pretty good, but I don't find it near as useful as the 18-50.
One day perhaps I'll experiment more with it but for now I keep it as a $pare.

It would depend which focal length is more useful for the type of photos you take. 50mm may not be long enough, and 24mm may not be wide enough.
