For a College Graduation

Graduation is hosted at my school at our football field. It's always outdoors. For shooting from the stands, would a 100mm lens be good to get shots of people on the stage? Normally you're within half the width of the football field in relation to the stage.

Your DA 55-300 sounds like the ideal choice to me, it should allow you to pick out specific people as well as taking the whole stage.

That's true, but the DA 55-300mm does not have the best IQ at the long end.

I had the 55-300mm at my friend's college graduation, and the lens was admirable especially under the bright sunny sky.

it's more than ok at 300mm, so he should be fine at around 250mm. the best rendering of the lens at the long end is at 210mm.

I would think 100mm will be too short for mid field from the stand. I would be looking at 150 - 250mm range easily for good closeup shots. A zoom lens would be ideal for a range of shots from portrait and wide angle.

Lens focal length calculator and fill in the numbers

If you want to fill a frame (landscape orientation) at a distance of 50 meters with a standing person being 180cm tall, you need a 440mm lens.

In which case you ideally want something longer available. Do you have the option of renting a Bigma?

I suspect the drop in IQ from your zoom will be considerably less than you'd get from cropping a 100 to the same extent - If not sell the zoom!
