Hi Everyone.
I have a chance to pick up a 300 smc 4.in excellent condition for about $700 - $750.
I wonder how this lens compares to da 300 f4. I understand the smc will be a 450 equivalent, are there any problems using this lens on a K5?

Which 300 f/4? The K, M*, A*?

If it's the K or M* it's way overpriced.

The main problem with the K is that it's heavy and lacks a tripod mount.

If you're talking about the FA* 300 f/4.5 then the price is a deal.

Do you mean a 300 f4 or a 300 f4.5 pentax lens? The f4.5 versions are auto-focus and are a terrific bargain at $750. The f4 versions are manual focus and are overpriced at $700. None of the manual focus f4s come with tripod mounts, which can be a problem with a 450mm "equivalent" lens.

The M* and A* versions of the 300 are generally consider as superior to K version, which is prone to rather serious bouts of purple fringing. $700 is way too much for the K version. I doubt it would be worth half that.

Forget about the equivalent. The focal length of any 300mm lens is 300mm! So a DA300mm gives the same field of view is my Super Takumar 300/4 from the 70s or so (both lenses on a APSc camera).
