OK,

so what do we have here.
FA50 was too wide, 77 is long enough but AF hunted, lens has 8 blades, and seems to have excellent OOF rendering in front or behind subject. Bit dreamy wide open, but seems tack sharp stopped down even one click as you said.
Now M85 has 6 blades, A*85 has 9 and FA* is AF, would it really be K85/1.8?

Yes. it is K85f1.8.

I have M85f2, but not as good at f2. I just got the K85f1.8 recently. After a drill of several hundreds photo in different conditions, I felt comfortable to take this lens and try in the church event, dim light. I am consider lucky to own a such lens.

here at f5.6 to give a blurred profile of a sail boat:

I've been learning from you guys (and venturing silent guesses ), but here's one from me in case someone is interested:

Hint: it's a fairly recent lens.

No, but if I say more in response, I will give it away. Here's another pic (slightly stopped down from the previous one):

And a lot more stopped down:

It's not 35mm.
It's look more like from a 50mm.

I think you still have the Zeiss, Tessar 50f2.8, and had shown us how to disassemble it recently.
Now as I don't have this lens, and the photos does not shown any typical characteristic for this lens, so my guess is based on pure luck, may be except for the focal length.

Twisted bokeh brings some biotar-based designs (like that famous Helios) to my mind. Just my 2c's.

I was torn between the two but the 40 usually has smoother backgrounds to my eyes, at least with backgrounds darker than the subject, I'm still torn !

Interesting.

axl was very close with his initial guess (FA50/1.4) and perhaps DA 35/2.4 has some similarities being from the same generation I am not sure.

It's the DA*55/1.4 - at f1.4, f1.7 and f5. I no longer own this lens but it gave me some nice portraits.

I'd be really interested how close you can get with other lenses especially FA50/1.4 which I've never owned. The DA*55 always seemed to have a unique look to it, but maybe that's because I've not had the FA50/1.4 and the others you mentioned.

Interesting bokeh. I haven't seen many photos from this lens. Currently having too many 50s MF that won't justify new purchase in this focal length.

Just saw the pics and straight away would have thought FA43 from the way it renders, but it doesnt suprise me that it was in fact the DA*55, those two lenses render images very much alike IMO.
