With longer lenses it gets much harder...
I'll go with F* or FA*300/4.5

I guess it was a hard one - not sure if anyone here owns it (and I don't either unfortunately).

It is a well-known lens but not for this type of work.

The bokeh is very nervous, but unfortunately that does not narrow it down enough for me to guess...

unless you did something special with the image, like cropped it. the dimensions do look odd.

I only assumed that this lens might be for birding focal length and judging it was for wildlife which would require distance. also the DOF has something to do as well.

if not, it could be something around 200mm. 135mm would be just too short for such a bit shallow DOF I think and too close for wildlife.

it's shot at f7.1.

It is cropped a bit. Here's another one from the same time that's cropped less. I thought the sharpness would give it away but maybe it is not that exceptional (shot at f8):

Are there lenses that don't look sharp with their output scaled down to 640px wide?

I think so. If the original image didn't capture much detail and microcontrast, I think you can still see it in the scaled down pic.

It was probably not a fair ask. Here's the lens doing more like the task it was intended for:

Anyway it's the A*200mm macro. I thought it was interesting to shoot some birds with it and see how it renders away from macro distances.

SMC Pentax-A* 200mm f4 macro, I considered it before, but didn't think it would have such a nervous bokeh as in the bird shot. But I suppose water surfaces are bad for any lense.

Nope, it's not 50mm and not MF. Unfortunately focus is a little bit off, slight front-focus - she moved back a tiny bit just when I released the shutter...

;-) that was my first though regarding MF.
My next guess is the Sigma 50-150, at around 70-90mm, may be at f3.2

I was gonna say the FA 31 f1.8, but the shoulder that's in focus still looks a bit soft. Is it the sigma 30 f1.4?

Also: Douglas, you shoot primarily with film bodies right? Maybe we should collectively state wether we shot a specific photograph with film, or cropped sensor, and if the output has been cropped when we post an image!
