Well this one is at f2 and that would be wide open on this one. If by off the beaten path you mean not pentax then yes it's not pentax. But it was produced in at least 7 versions that I can think of off hand in both m42 and Kmount. In Kmount it was produced in single and multicoated versions this one is a single coated Kmount I would not call it off the beaten path because I'm pretty sure it was manufactured in an extremely large quantity

Yes The 44K-4 to bee precise. On film I love it for images I want to have low contrast and a soft feel But on the Kx you can crank up the conrast a bit an it's resolution holds up well. Only problem is the Auto-aperture linkage does not engage properly on my ME or MX but it works fine on the Kx. But since I like to use the aperture ring any ways it works out fine

Be happy that there are still new lenses to discover.

Just got this a couple of days ago for $5:

This is wide open, and sort of cheating because you can see the lens in the picture!

Based off of the distance in the reflection I'd say it looks similar to what I'd get with the F 135mm (looks to be a bit less though..... so maybe 90-120mm range?). My first guess was M 100mm F/2.8 as my friend just got one and thats what popped up in my head but than i read you got it for $5. So maybe an off brand lens close in that focal range?

I think you need to give us more clues and pictures. The 100-135mm off brand K-mount or m42 lenses are like the stars on the sky. And the darker they get, the more stars you see...

So to compensate this, i give a big multi try

Tamron adaptall 105/2.5
Vivitar S1 105/2.5
Cosina 135/2.8
Cosina 100/3.5
Ricoh 135/2.8
Soligor 135/2.8
Sears 135/2.8
Chinon 135/2.8

all the 100-135 i know ...
