My suggestion is you replace your existing camera with either the K-5 or K-r (more responsive AF and better high ISO capability) and mate it with the new DA 35mm f/2.4.

Wow, went away for a couple days and came back to a ton more advice. Thanks. I do have a flash, though it is fully manual. So far I find it pretty easy to set for a room without too much trouble. I guess if I have trouble with that I could go for a TTL solution like the 540.

I hear you on the AF advantage. I think I have figured out that I have "enough" already, so I may or may not get something else, probably just play it by ear.

If your manual flash tilts and swivels, then you don't really need a P-TTL flash. Just go to M mode, calculate exposure by the graphs or trial and error, and you get consistent results...

Enjoy.

Yep, it's got both tilt and swivel (and zoom and power settings) and I quite like it so far (LP160).

Then you've got everything you need, unless you want the flash off camera.

Just to chime in, I have a 5 month old. I picked up a manual 28mm f2.8 and a 50mm f1.9 for lower light indoor shots, and they have been treating me well. I have been favoring the 28mm though, heavily.
