"Upgrade" Sigma 17-70 to Tammy 17-50?

My trusty Sigma 17-70 rarely leaves my camera unless I need the faster, better-IQ FA50. I often treat it like a 17mm prime and only really go to 70 with it for the occasional macro. I'm looking at the Tamron 17-50 for an IQ and speed increase. I'd sell the 17-70 to fund the purchase.

Thoughts?

Hi Lavascript:

That makes sense to me, especially since you do not use the 70mm end of the Siggy that much. The constant 2,8 aperture of the Tamron will be a plus as will other aspects of the lens. I own a Tamron 17-50mm and like it a lot--so do many others--there are lots of shots with it in here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/31955-tammy-cl...ml#post1328216 In this thread here https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/125517-da%2A-1...ml#post1324580 you'll find lots of discussion on 3 possible upgrades to your Sigma 17-70mm.

The new Sigma 17-50 f2.8 HSM is even sharper than the Tamron. Early shots I have seen posted with it here look excellent. It has HSM and -in-lens stabilization if those are luxuries you are okay paying the extra $$ for. Goood Luck

Yeah, but at almost twice the price, I can't afford it right now. I really wish they made a non-OS version for us non-Canikon folks who don't need it.

yep I feel yer on that mate...

its a great lens though...might be worth saving for...as you'll only buy it once..and will last you many body upgrades

from what I can gather..the Tamron is super sharp, and I've seen some very good images from that lens..QC is its down fall, with some having to go through several to find a goodun.
so if you do go Tamron..make sure its a outlet that will allow returns etc..
