Lens CLA

Hello,
I recently acquired a Pentax SMC 40-80mm zoom. I took some test shots with it, it's a nice lens (and cheap!). However, there's a minor spot of fungus behind the front element. It's not in the frame, but I'd like to address it BEFORE it is. How much is a lens cleaning going to cost, or is it possible to clean the element myself?
Also would it help to freeze the lens or something to stop the fungus from growing? I live in florida, and I'm worried that the 80+ and humid weather will be bad news for my new lens.

Can someone help me out?

The only effective way of cleaning fungus is to wipe it off physically (with isopropyl alcohol then with acetone). I don't have this lens but the front glass of some lenses can be removed from the front easily. If yours is one of these lenses, then you may clean it yourself. Otherwise, I will leave it for the pro. But in practice, if you keep it dry in storage, the fungus probably will not spread.

I've done the cleaning on several prime lenses but I've never clean the zoom before. I heard the zooms are more complex but if your lens has fungus on the front element then it should be easy.

There are several articles and topics tackling "how to clean fungus" subject so just try to Google a bit and you should have plenty of information.

I found this site quite helpful, it's obviously not your lens but you will get the idea.

Hope this helps.

If you don't want to do it yourself, I recommend that you send it to Eric for cleaning. He is a former Pentax technician and does great work at a fair price. He might even be able to email you a quote.

His website is here --> Home
