Have I answered my own question?

Earlier I was demonstrating (showing off?) my A50 f1.7 to a friend who has never used a MF lens and got some surprising results.

When shooting using the focus indicator/trap in focus techniques the images seemed out-of-focus.

However, when I took the same shot focusing using my eyes/matt screen (normal method) the images were in focus.

Do MF lenses need AF adjustment when using the camera to confirm focus? I can't think of a reason why they would be spared but I have never thought about it before.

I have never tired AF adjustment with a MF lens, wouldn't hurt to try it, but I can say that the catch-in-focus is not always accurate. The focus indicator has the slightest give to it, meaning once the light is on you can still turn the focus ring a bit which will result in an out-of-focus photo. That is why I am not a big fan of that option.

Your suspicion is correct. The luminous focus confirmation is part of the AF mechanism.
