Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 vs. Tamron 28-75mm 2.8

Which one is more versatile? Just all around versatility leaning a bit towards wedding photography. And they both fit the Pentax Kx right? Thanks in advance.

yes, both of those lenses will fit your K-x. Do you know if you'd use the wide end very much? If not, then go for the 28-75 since it would give you more reach which I would think would be handy for weddings.

The 17-50mm would be the 35mm equivalent of about 26-75mm. The wide end would be useful for groups and interiors. The 28-75mm would be equivalent to a 42-112mm lens. You would be giving up a lot on the wide end. I've taken wedding photos and for me the 17-50mm would be the better lens. You can usually get closer but sometimes can't back up enough with a longer lens.

I shoot the 17-50 indoors mostly. I go for a longer lens outdoors where distance from subject is obviously less constrained.

The 28 is more versatile, but simply cannot do a tight, wide indoor portrait, which is a very, very common type of shot for me (kids wrestling on the couch where I have maybe 6 ft. separation, max.). Your needs may vary, but I need wider than 28 indoors.

The 17-50 will do it all for weddings and receptions. I use the DA 16-45 which is about the same and I need all of the wide end for groups around tables at receptions in tight spaces. The 28-75 was intended for full frame general use, not cropped sensor.

1) Shouldn't this be in the LENS forum?

2) If the wedding+reception are in smaller spaces where you're close to everyone, the 17-50. If it's the next Royal Wedding in Westminster Abbey, the 28-70, or maybe a 55-300, or even a Bigma 50-500. If it's a Moonie wedding of 10,000, get an 18-250.

2a) My daughter's Gothic wedding was in a huge darkened hall on Hallowe'en night, all attendees in formal Masque. Their friend the fotog (who'd mostly shot raves, not weddings) SHOULD have used an 18-200 at least, and a couple potato-masher strobes, but didn't, so the wedding pics were lousy. So: Use a lens that is appropriate for the space.

Unless you've shot weddings on film with the 28-75, there is no need to think about the crop factor. And if that 28-75 worked for you on film, you should now use the 17-50 because you basically want the same equivalent field of view (as explained by dvest in post #4)

Hm, probably getting the 17-50, also, do you guys have any other advice on a perhaps better lens? For versatility? And does the Pentax version of this lens have VC (Vibration Compensation)

The 17-50/2.8 is an exceptional lense as is the 28-75 : check out The Tammy Club thread for some greats examples.

Pentax cameras don't need VC - all their cameras have it built into the body unlike Canon / Nikon.

17-5X... the 28-75 is cheaper i think... and someone just said it, 28 is not for any group shot with more than 4 people (you won't get enough distance between you and the subject) on the crop sensor that is.

the 17-5X is great, it's basically a faster kit len (way faster haha).

Current Pentax lenses in the same range
DA*16-50
DA17-70 (not as fast as what you're looking at, but covers the FL of the 17-50 and 28-75)
DA16-45 (I think it's discontinued but you might still be able to find it)

I'm reading in a lot of places now that the new Sigma 17-50 2.8 is better than the Tamron 17-50 2.8.. hm.

Ultimately, you have to decide how your setup will cover the focal lengths you want for your weddings. I have had a DA* 16-50 buddied with a 70-200, at times a DA 12-24, Tamron 28-75 and an FA 100/2.8 macro, now most commonly the DA 12-24, Tamron 28-75 and the Tamron 70-200 with 1.4x TC. So both the 17-50 and 28-75 are well suited for the application - 17-50 on its own will cover the wide angle stuff, but the 28-75 will fall short of that capability, and so will need something else wider than 24mm to do some group shots/venue captures, etc.
