Focus speed: 43mm/1.9 vs 55mm/1.4

I'm thinking of buying another 43mm limited, as I miss it. If I remember right, it focused pretty fast for a film lens. Since I last owned it, though, the 55/1.4 came into being, and the focus speed was said to be disappointing to people. The two are comparably priced, and I already have an SMC Tak if I really, really need 1.4... So which lens focuses faster?

I'm going to guess the 43 1.9 focuses faster from everything I have read.

That is correct, the 43 focuses faster than the 55.

Is it true that the DA* 55 is actually slower than most SDM lenses?

I think I've owned all the SDM lenses at one point or another and if I had to guess at the order, I'd say it something like this:

(fastest to slowest) DA*300, DA*200, DA*17-70, DA*60-250, DA*16-50, DA*50-135, DA*55.

I might be biased on the DA*200/300 being the fastest because I seldom used them in bad light, whereas the 17-70 was probably used indoors some in more difficult light. Regardless of the exact order, the DA*55 is certainly on the slow side, and most likely the slowest.

FWIW, the focus throw on both the DA*55 and 50-135 seems to be about 135-150 degrees, where as the 16-50 and 60-250 is probably closer to 45 degrees. I no longer own the 200,300 or 17-70, but I imagine they had pretty short focus throws as well.

You're welcome. Both the 43 and 55 are fantastic lenses, and in practice the AF speed of the 55 isn't a really an issue for most applications. So even though the 43 has faster AF (on my K-5 at least), if you prefer the IQ, focal length and/or speed(aperture) of the 55 over the 43, I wouldn't let the AF speed play too big a factor in decsion.

They are really different focal lengths. I can understand comparing the FA 43 and DA 40, but the DA *55 is quite a bit longer (and faster) than the FA 43. I find the auto focus fast enough for most applications, although it isn't particularly fast.

I most certainly like the IQ of the 43, so that isn't an issue.
