DA 55-300mm vs DA* 60-250mm: FL question

I am shooting an 18-250 now that I just recently acquired from a fellow forum member, but when SDM get's worked out (hopefully sooner than later!) I am going to get a DA* 16-50 and then add either the 55-300 or the 60-250. Of course the main difference seems to be size versus speed, but I have one question about reach......

the 55-300 has that extra 50mm at the long end, but because of the IQ of the 60-250, would a photo taken at 250mm with the 60-250 and then cropped likely be of equal IQ as a shot at 300mm with the 55-300? Or does the 55-300 really have an extra bit of reach that you sacrifice with the 60-250 for speed?

Thanks! -LE

There are lots of factors to consider here- obviously the added magnification is a huge bonus, but considering that the aperture will be smaller, there might be more motion blur involved. Under ideal test conditions, I'm willing to bet the 55-300 would win, but not in practice.

The 55-300 is nice because it is light and that is where the advantages end.
The extra 50mm on reach does not amount to much more magnification.

The DA 55-300 is not very sharp past 210mm or so in my testing. So, in that regard, I think the extra FL is not an advantage.

How about the DA* 200 for a compromise? Smaller and less expensive than the 60-250, better IQ plus sealing as compared to the 55-300.......plus wouldn't have to invest in more filters since it is 77 like the 16-50.....

DA* 200 might sound cheaper in the beginning, then later on, add the DA*55, DA*50-135, DA*300.
LBA comes to mind.

O.K. well, that would be like WM trashcan taking on BMW 325 series.
I shoot with both of them and like both. Just that they are in a different performance bracket.

The 60-250 is the better lens, there's no doubt whatsoever, but the 55-300 is considerably longer. Just like your 18-250, the 60-250 is only 250mm at infinity focus. At closer focus distances, it loses range. The 55-300 does not suffer this loss of range, it has a 300mm fov at all subject distances.
