K50/1.2 + FA77 or A50/1.2 + FA100/2.8

Hi all,
So... Here is my issue. I have K50 + 77ltd. Love rendering of both but miss aperture control on K and don't use 77 too often due to it's focal length, despite fantastic output and AF. I used to have FA100/2.8 macro and liked it but sold it to fund 77. The IQ of the 100 is terrific IMO and since it's slightly longer I'm tad more comfortable with it. Frankly there isn't much that 77 could do that I can't do with 50/1.2...

Now, there is a shop in my area that has both A series 50/1.2 and FA100/2.8. Pricetags roughly match what I would get for selling my K50 and FA77. So I'm really tempted to make a swap!

Any opinions?

Does seem you've made your decision Peter - just stick with it and avoid the dreaded seller's remorse.
If you're not using the 77 enough to justify having it, sad to say but it's good for nothing

The FA 100/2.8 macro is indeed a fine and beautifully constructed lens - not bad wide open, but I'd favour the FA 77 in those wide apertures (f/2.8-5.6). The colours do come out quite differently, but nothing you can't alter effectively in PP. All the best in your final decision.

are you sure that it is a 1.2 and not a 1:2 ? for $20 it is more likely a 1:2 and not the 1.2.

Normally I'd agree, but the serial number (1430235) seems more consistent with the A50/1.2 (link) than the A50/2 (link).

Its the 50 1.2 and not the 50 2.0. The camera shop was going out of business so they were accepting any price! I think its the original model as it does not have any letter on the lens. The info on my original post is straight of the front of the lens. Thanks.

It won't do much good on your 645 (it only covers 135 [35mm] frame); but it will make you a $300-$400 profit, depending on its condition: SMC Pentax 50mm F1.2 Lens Reviews - Pentax Lens Reviews & Pentax Lens Database

Does it include the box? You can find an original matching rear-cap for $10 or less. If it's new / old stock with everything else, it would be worth even more!

Based on the serial number starting with 143 (link) and the "lack of a letter" on the lens, I'd be willing to bet a lot of money it's a K50/1.2

Back to the OP -- tough not to hijack a thread on this previous casual comment.

It sounds reasonable to me. The point is -- you don't use the 77 much, and can likely recover most of what you paid for it. The metering advantage of the A50 is pretty big deal to me -- You've got enough to deal with with the DOF @ 1.2.

Two things to consider:

Have you compared the build and focus dampening of the K v. A 50 ?

What about the D-FA WR 100 ? If the WR would be a plus to you, I might look there as well -- even if the transaction is a bit more or less convenient.

Peter, the only concern i have for the FA100 for you is, it may not be fast enough for a speed freak such as your self.

thanks guys for the input....
well things changed, I went for K-7 (so far really happy camper, the body is much better then I had expected). For now I'm sticking with 3 FA Ltds + FA*24 and K50/1.2... the last one will be decided upon though.... I'll see how often I'll use it on K-7 as FA43 is claiming it's place on camera more and more and since I have no grip for new body, 43 is much more balanced. As for 77, it goes well with 43 and I believe once baby is here it'll get it's workout....
+ TOUGEFC's shots from 43+77 are very inspirational...

I'm glad you are happy with your purchase Peter. I kinda forgot one of the most important aspect of the K-7. and that is the ergo and more compact size. personally I'm quite lost sometimes with the ergo of the K20D and K10D. funny thing about the K-7's size is that how small it is compared to other cameras of the same bracket. and I'm not really surprised at all why the K-5's body is identical to that of the K-7. if I were to say this, the K-5 is more of a K-7 with a refurbished new sensor. too bad about the sensor stain issue though.
