looking to replace kit lens and

was wondering other opions on either of the following Pentax 18-135 or Pentax 17-70. I know that the 18-135 does have longer reach, not that important to me,just interested mainly on some of your views on build and IQ between these two lenses, thanks.

I don't know that anyone has the 18-135 yet. Suggest you check the lens reviews, as there is quite a body of knowledge there.

If reach is not your motivator, but build and IQ is (and perhaps silent focusing) then the DA* 16-50 sounds like what you may be after. If not for WR, then the Tamron 17-50 is the most logical next choice. Between your two mentioned lenses, it's going to be hard to tell the 'build' of the 18-135 as very few people have actually held it in their hands, but it's been acclaimed to have very decent IQ. The 17-70 is much more widely known, is also SDM but not built anything like a DA*. Check out its reviews in the Lens review database for more info.

As Ash said, not many people have the 18-135 yet, so advice is limited there. If reach is not important, though, then...

If reach is important, then it's important. If reach is NOT important, then what will another lens do that your 18-55 won't do, other than make managers and shareholders at PenHoya happy? No, I'm not trying to restart the KIT LENS DOES/DOESN'T SUCK wars, just wondering about your motivations. Cheers!

I would do the 17-70 because it is a little faster at the long end and does not distort as much... but I actually rarely go above 100 so I am super biased, and I am skeptical of any zoom that attempts to do too much.
