35mm F2.4 as sharp as this A50F1.7 example?

Hi, I am still struggling with the idea of getting a better quality lens than my 2 kit zooms from my *stDL. I have a K-7 now. I don't have the kind of money for the 21mm yet I see myself more in the 21-24 range for a prime, faster than the kit preferably. So while maybe not wide enough the new 35 looks pretty promising.

Now I have an A50 F1.7 so fast, great bokah, seems super sharp WHEN I get a good shot out of the thing being manual focus. But I despise the focal length, way too tight for me. Everytime I shoot with it, I have to back way the heck up.

Here is a shot I took in Boston. To my eyes this is rockin sharp and has good contrast for such a dreary day. I did do a bit of tweeking in a demo of Lightroom. I had to back up, back up, back up a hill to get this shot, unacceptable which is why I still wonder if even the 35 would have made this shot easier.

But my main question is: do you think the new 35 can produce an image as good as this? I only have my 1st gen 2 kit lenses and this 50 to go by and I know this 50 is sharper than the kit.

You can use the +/- symbols in Picasa to zoom in close to a 1:1 ratio. Any thoughts?Picasa Web Albums - Kevin - Boston Shots

Almost like u, i bought the DA 35 2.4 to replace my M50 1.7......... after riding half a month wif it, i did see some very sharp picture from the DA35, but still cant quite play a close game wif the M50.
The biggest challenge i hv wif the DA35 so far is all about the color temperature, it is either too cold or too warm ........ which is never on the right side. I m not sure if this has sth to do with the chip in the lens but my M50 is pretty consistent on color (might be slightly warmer sometime)

Not sure if i hv the right impression, still trying to get used to it

The Pentax-A 50 f1.7 is a tough cookie to beat in every aspect (sharpness, colors, bohek). I ended up owning two and I'm not about to part with either one soon.
I guess from my lenses I could only compare it to my Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and the DA 40 f2.8 limited so it may not help you much. Anyway, none of them is as sharp.
Unlike you, I love the focal length of the A50 on ASP-C. I was feeling more comfortable with it than with my new DA 40.
Maybe you should consider an used FA50 f2.0 as well. I know I am
Here's a thorough comparison of the 35s:

I shouldn't be surprised you all have the 50 1.7 like me. When I got my DL people seemed to rave about this prime and at $50 a cheap investment.

Thanks for giving me the heads up that it will be a high standard lens to compare to.

I guess I am surprised I shoot wide but those those 35mm comparisons are great and I think the new lens holds up well and the street shots in the foreign country look amazing. I like the idea of the fast autofocus.

If only it was wider. But I am still a hair away from pulling the trigger.

No such thing as an FA 50 f/2.0 The first 50 f/2 Pentax made was the M 50 f/2 and the last 50 f/2 Pentax made was the A 50 f/2. Both are lenses you can skip. They don't come close to the 1.7 until about f/8. There is a FA 50 f/2.8 macro though.

Maybe someday I'll win the lottery and be able to afford the FA 35 2.0. Even the DA 35 Lmtd costs more than my K-x did.

Most primes are pretty sharp if you use them properly. Most zooms are as well. MTF charts are marketing hogwash.

The AF of the 35 is going to make it a better lens, even if it ISN'T as sharp. Sharpness means nothing without focus.

Yeah, the FA35 is quite expensive brand new but it seems to have a lower resale price. In Romania they go for about 220 and there's also an identical Samsung version which could go for less. I don't think a used DA35 limited can be found for this price.
Nevertheless the new DA35 f2.4 is a lot cheaper brand new and I think it's a very good option.
