DA 12-24MM F4.0 ED AL (IF) vs DA 14 mm F2.8 EDIF

I am looking for a wideeee angle lens and tossing up between these two.
Looking for owners opinions and open to other comparisons.
Thanks

The 12-24/4 is a superb wide-angle lens. Sharp full open and minimal disortions. If landscape is what you're after, then 12-24 is the right choice, imo. The the 14mm is faster, so better indoor in low light. I'd go for the 12-24 if size and speed are no issue. If size IS a issue, the best bet would be the 15mm limited.

Based on my experience with 2 copies of the DA14, it is excellent at closeup distance even wide open, but really poor for scenery where anything beyond the centre 60-70% area is not sharp at all even stopped down to f11. I think there is a field curvature issue toward infinity with this lens because its sharpness is unusually good across the frame with newspaper test, just the opposite of how most wide angles behave.

I just found a second hand SIGMA 14mm f2.8 can it stand up to the pentax 14mm 2.8?

The Sigma was designed for film and not that great. Better stick with DA12-24 or DA15.

Last summer after buying a DA 14, I did a test of my UWA lenses for comparison purposes. As this was done on my lunch hour, middle of the day, hand held, it's more or less a field user test. I had my Samsung 12-24 (clone of the Pentax lens), DA 10-17, and for fun the DA*16-50, along with my DA 14. You may find this test useful.

I did a second test with the camera on tripod mount between the DA10-17 and Samsung 12-24. I tossed in a few with the DA14 at the end. This isn't as direct a test as the first one for the OP concerns but I might offer another perspective.

My only regret is that I didn't have access to the DA15limited. That would have been very definitive to complete that test.

thanks fo the samples. other than the difference in color rendering, the DA14 suffers greatly at the corners.

Id choose the DA12-24 for flexibility and the wide end. the difference of 12 to 15 is quite big when compared. I just wish Pentax could make like a 9mm or 11mm f4 prime without compromising the size

I would add that with a polarizer, while I don't get a lot of vignetting, the angle of view is so great that the differences in blue sky (light and dark) can be less than satisfactory, but that tends to be true of most UWA lenses.

Is it worth splurging out $900-1000 on a new pentax 14mm or 12-24mm
or rather do just go the sigma im not looking for pure perfection just to get a decent picture
The sigma is $300 second hand and in veryyy good condition?
Your opinions?

Have you looked in the Sigma Club yet? That should answer your question. I own the 10-20mm f4-5.6--couldn't be happier.

Which Sigma? Probably doesn't matter - those UWA lenses are all pretty decent.
If value for money is what you're after then go for the deal in front of you. You won't find a better use of $300 in terms of UWA photography. If it were up to IQ purely, then I'd say the 12-24 would win out on a small margin, but more so than with the DA 14.

I've had the DA 14 and whilst the metal construction was solid, it didn't have the 'soul' and rendition of the 12-24 - and this is reflected in their respective values. The 12-24 is worth what it goes for nonetheless.
