SIGMA 135-400 or 170-500?

Which one do you think I should get (unfortunately the BIGMA is over my budget, plus would incur import taxes).

135-400 US$589

or

170-500 US$649

Use for wildlife and sports on my Samsung GX-10.

Advice appreciated. Thanks

I like my 135-400 even though my copy has to go in under warranty
You might have problems finding one though, they aren't available in Canada anymore so I think that they may have stopped making them.

I like my 135-400mm. Its way more managable than the Bigma. I picked mine up new on Ebay. Keep looking. You'll find one I'm sure.

As a matter of fact, there seems to be one for sale in the marketplace..... I spoke too soon. it was sold

I just bought one from the marketplace and I must say that I'm enjoying it a lot. I have a few early pictures up - this was a bit of a hazy day which you notice slightly in one of the pictures. Also, I didn't quite get good focus on the picture of the fall leaves, but I'm sure it's operator error based on the many focused pictures I got that day.

I've decided to pay the $60 more for an extra 100mm and have ordered the 170-500 from sigma4less.com. I'll let you know how it goes.

A few posters claim the 135-400 has better IQ than the 170-500. I would be tempted to go with the 170-500 myself, but the size and need for a tripod for either of them has put me off...

That is where I ordered mine. I am happy with the 170-500. So, maybe it's not as good as the Bigma, but works for me and my budget. And I love the reach.

Here is a pic taken at 500mm with the 170-500.

I have this in Nikon mount. I don't pull it out very often, but i find it yields pleasant results.

I paid $500 Canadian used for mine about 2 years ago, if that helps.

I rediscovered my 170-500 with the K10

I recently acquired the K10 and I must say the SR has given this lens a new chance!

It's quite sharp from 170 to 400 and still OK if stopped down to f8 @ 500mm.

I also find the AF to be quite speedy on the K10.

Here are a couple of test shots from last weekend, all handeld.

What is the advantage in your opinion over the Bigma and will the 170-500 perform as well as the Bigma or better? Will any of these do well with fast moving soccer/futball? I currently use the FA 80-320 with somewhat acceptable results. Can I expect better with one of these lenses, preferably the Bigma since it goes down to 50mm?

Thanks for any input.

Well these are my opinions only...
What I have found for example is this...
My Sigma 70-300 lens produces sharper more crisp pics than my 28-300 lens..
It is simply asking the 28-300 lens to do to much...My 70-300 lens sweet spot is 75-280... The sweet spot on my 28mm to 300 is 55-200...
My 135-400 is very sweet from 135 to 380
My Bigma is about 150-430 or so...When you also consider the fact that the bigma is a tank in weight, it makes an even bigger difference..I am a big fellow and I can man handle it fairly well...but I suspect most people will not be able to...My wife who is 5'2'' and weighs 130Lbs can't handle it and she is pretty strong...

I have been wanting to start a comparison thread, so perhaps it is time..
Hope this helps
