The superior contrast from the FA 31 is pretty clear.

I just like the 31 better. No real reason. I do think the 50 is soft.

That's the nice thing about photography....it's open to what you like . Apparently I take "dark" pictures so I've started to lighten them up....

The next interesting comparison is the cost of these two lenses
Surprising, I purchased a new A50/1.2 last year for somewhere around $550, a lot less than what a new 31/1.8 goes for. It came from a Japanese eBay vendor, the one that sells the good stuff.

Excellent test Peter well done! I think it would be interesting to see a A50 f/1.2 thrown into the mix as well considering it has 1 extra aperture blade than the K50 f/1.2.

True but that's OK. One persons best is another's throw away. My K85 might not be the most expensive lens I own, and many would announce it inferior to others in my kit, but it's the best lens for me by far.

That's the nice thing about these comparison shots, you can decide for yourself. You're seeing members preferences based on qualities that they like. This is a good thing.

I feel very similarly with my M 85mm F/2

I love seeing these threads, and viewing peoples comments which differ from my own opinion greatly Its interesting Anyone remember the 50mm F/1.7 vs. 50mm F/1.4 thread?

After reading some responses to my comments, I went back to look over the comparison. I only skimmed it at first, concentrating on the full pictures (not the crops)... it's how I tend to compare lenses.

From the crops, it's actually pretty clear that the 50 1.2 is very sharp, much sharper than the 31 (or the 50 1.4 / 1.7). Really killer lens. I think I prefer the 31's overall rendering, but not because it is the sharpest, apparently .

Cool comparison! Now I will go off and sulk for a few years till I can afford one (if that EVER happens :P).

They both look pretty darn good to me. I do not see clear superiority either way, but I am pretty forgiving of my lenses.

Original Poster
Here is composite from K50 shots from the same spot as 31 ltd

Untitled-4 by [url=http://]

it looks like I was slightly front focused on that run and despite I made 100% flickr seems to have resized to roughly half the size (this shared file is 1024 on long side, my original is 2500 pix)
If anyone would want original crops or even original full size photos to evaluate just PM me your email, I'll send them...
