The 18-250 is no longer made, so you have to find a used copy. Tamron made it for Pentax and rebadged it, but there are plenty of copies floating around out there.

As to where I use a 55-300, mainly in situations where I can't get close to what I am shooting. Could be taking pictures of birds, at the zoo, of wildlife. You can use it for a poor man's macro as well. It can also be used for portraits (around 150 to 200mm) since it is f4.5 in that range and has good isolation.

All of that said, I don't use my 55-300 very much and tend to use shorter (better quality) zooms and primes.

I also find myself using that lens much less than I thought I would. I mostly use it at sporting events or for animals at a distance. For portraits or even dance performances, I'm inclined toward a fast 50, FA77 or K135/2.5. For travel, I take the far more compact 50-200 (yes, I know the IQ is not quite as good).

After the Photozone test of the 18-135 I lost interest in that lens. Unless it turns out that they had a dud copy, there is no doubt that the 18-250 is the better choice unless one needs the weather-resistance.
