There was an FA* 300/2.8 on ebay a month or so ago for $3100 that I passed on. I was leery of something that expensive, no warranty, and if it needed repair service, I might not be able to get it.

I hand-hold my 300mm and 2x a lot and have a hard enough time tracking and holding the camera steady without worrying about focus with my tired old eyes.I tried it before and wasted a lot of time and missed some good opportunities.

Wow .. wish we had scenery like that, would love to get a photo that good.
I may well have a good look at the 120-300mm f2,8 if they get round to releasing it in Pentax mount though. I actually cheat a little if needbe and virtually never use the lens as it was intended and so bought a 1,7AF teleconverter which gives me a nice quick semi af 500mm f4.5 on the K-5.

That looks like a great combo Mike.
I liked the 1.7x on a tamron 360b I had, but the PF was bad unless stopped down so I used the DA 300mm with it, but wanted something faster. My ultimate setup was going to be the FA300mm f2.8 as I had the 1.7x, a 1.5x kenko shq and a 2x tamron sp. When the FA* 300mm 2.8 I got turned out to be a dud I pretty much gave up on trying to find a good solution for my pentax.
