I have a da* 300f4 and a Kenko 1.5x SHQ with a K-x
I only used this combination for a handful of photos.

They are not very good but will give you a general idea.
The osprey shots were me practicing manual focus for bif.
The egret was autofocus, testing for purple fringing and bokeh.
The images came out much better then I thought they would, but autofocus with a moving object (bif) is tough! Or should I say tougher!!
The osprey shots were about 50% crops and no pp on any shots.

I tried this tc with the dal 55 300 and an older version of the sigma 100 f2.8,
For these I would not bother. Purple fringing and autofocus was unusable.

Not very good? Maybe by some standards but I would be Thrilled to be able to get pictures like that (translate, have the skill to catch them).

I have to agree with Jeff....Star those shots are amazing. Makes me want a DA*300 even more. I especially like #2 and #3

Thanks Fellas,
I guess I have an affinity towards sharp images and good glass.
It comes from my astronomy background.

Don't know if you still care about this or not...

DA*300mm with Tamron 2x Teleconverter (the PZ version).

That is easily 100 yards away, hand held. Here's the full sized version.

Sorry, all I have right now is my IR modded K20d.

You can see a few more here.

Pentax DA*300mm SDM - a set on Flickr

On that camera, SDM does not function with this combo. Aperture control does, I couldn't tell you what the actual aperture was however. The camera still reads f4 for wide open, etc.

Thanks Jeff,

I appreciate any information and that you took the time to respond. Good to know that AF doesn't work. Sounds very similar to the Sigma TC's the 2.0x doesn't AF either.
If I could ask do you have the Tamron 1.4x TC as well?

Anytime.. I always enjoy an excuse to take pictures of any kind. I don't have the 1.4x though. Just the Tamron 2x, a Vivitar 2x (macro focusing), and the Pentax 1.7x AF converter, the latter being my favorite to use with this lens.

There was a rumor around 3 years ago about Pentax doing a 1.4x SDM converter but it seemed to get scrapped. I think that was about the time Hoya took over Pentax. The pre-order price my (then) local camera shop was quoted was something like $400. I think there was even a photo of it on the Pentax roadmap brochure of the time. I'll have to dig that out and see.
