Tokina 28-70mm F2.6-2.8 ATX PRO

Hi folks, I've been looking at getting a more general lens to go with my current setup of Sigma 10-20, Pentax 35mm f2.4 and the Tamron 70-300, I've just about decided that picking up a Sigma 17-70 is going to be what I get but I've noticed the Tokina 28-70mm F2.6-2.8 ATX PRO lens and I had a couple of queries.

Firstly what are peoples impressions of the lens does it produce good picture quality? I noticed that the reviews over at Dyxum seem really good albeit in a Sony/Minolta mount however I imagine it would be almost the same in a Pentax Mount.

Secondly what would be a good price for this lens as I'm not sure if the vendor is charging a vastly high price or a good price.

I know that its slightly longer at the narrow end than the Sigma 17-70 I was close to ordering but it never really bothered me before when I predominantly used a Minolta 28-105 on my Sony A700.

Also I believe its built like a tank which is something that I really like in a lens (have previously had few Minolta Beercans!)

Thanks folks.

the raved lenses on this forum are ...

tamron 28-75 / 2.8

sigma 24-70 / 2.8

People absolutely adore the tammy.

for an apsc sensor, however you would want to consider a 16-50 room range to be more usable as a normal walk around lens. Choices

1. pentax 16-50
2. tamron 17-50
3. sigma 17-50

there was a lens thread about the latter three .. and the OP went with the tammy.

The Tokina is reportedly good. I mean the one you are looking at.
Tamron 28-75 has terrific IQ but some folks had issues with the build of the lens, Sigma 24-70 has always been considered good but big as a brick. But the 2nd version of it (HSM one) is considered to be one of the finest lenses in the class.
Back to Tokina. Have a look at Photozone.de, I believe they tested it for one of the mounts...

+1 for Tokina.
If you're looking at third party lenses, don't forget this one.
I have the 28-200mm f/3.5-5.3 in Pentax K mount.
I'm saving up for the 11-16mm f/2.8 in Nikon F mount.

if you're going to use it to shot indoor or low light situation at F2.8 without flash, this lens is not a good performer..it hunt a lot in dim light and causing missfocussed (FF/BF)..

but it will work awesome with flash or in daylight/outdoor and damn sharp even at F2.8..

the color rendering and contrast is very nice..

built quality is not a problem..it build like a tank..
