Bokeh at f 8.0

As is generally understood, medium format aperture designations differ from those of smaller formats. The largest known medium format aperture is the Mamiya 80mm f 1.9, while the largest Pentax aperture is that of the Pentax 67 105mm f 2.4. The 105mm/2.4 has become a favorite among natural light wedding photographers. The f 2.8 aperture is the most common maximum aperture for medium format lenses. The focal plane of a medium format lens of f 2.8 aperture is extremely thin, making a lens of this aperture about as difficult to focus as a full-frame lens of around f 1.4 or larger aperture, and the bokeh of such a lens becomes highly blurred as would the bokeh of an f 1.2 or 1.4 lens in the full-frame format. Accordingly, it is possible to produce credible bokeh with medium format lenses, used on medium format cameras, at higher numbered (smaller diameter) bokehs such as f 5.6 and even f 8.0. I have recently begun exploring the nature of bokeh backgrounds achievable using various medium format cameras with selected medium format lenses. My thought is that using smaller apertures with medium format lens/camera setups will produce sharper images that still offer suitably blurred backgrounds, allbeit perhaps not so blurred or abstract as backgrounds from, say the K-1 with a lense of f 1.2 or 1.2 aperture. Shown here is a photo taken with the Pentax 645Z and the Pentax 67 75mm f 2.8 lens.
