The rarely-seen fruit of the ginkgo tree. Ginkgos are sexed, and only the females produce fruit (for those strange souls who slept through sex-education class). The fruits have a nasty, rancid smell, so almost all ginkgos in ornamental settings are male. But this female ended up on a local lawn - cue grizzled old nurseryman at local garden store - "yes ma'am, that there's a boy ginkgo". Or maybe the owner covets the tasty, nutritious seeds inside, and is willing to put up with the smell. Either way, it's worth a photograph. Especially apt for the season, it looks like a grinning skull. SMC Takumar 55mm f/2.
