Great portraits. Those green tree balls are from a tree that is native to the U.S., specifically to the area of northern Texas and Oklahoma. It has several names, Osage Orange and Bois d'Arc, the latter because American Indians used its tough and resilient wood to make their archery bows. The trees are spread across the U.S. nowadays because in the last century, in the 1920s and 1930s they were sold widely as a so-called living fence. If you plant rows of these trees about ten feet apart they will grow into a tough, dense, thorny mass of branches that neither man nor animal can easily penetrate.
