Some bokehlicious photos with DA50/1.8

Either you got a really nice copy of this lens, or it really really rocks when you stop it down a bit... fantastic pictures.

The DA50 like more or less all 50mm primes rocks when you stop them down a bit. Starting f/4 they give all the contrast, detail, vibrant colors and sharpness corner to corner you can get out of the sensor.

Here all photos are f/4 or more closed down except the last one that is f/2.8... And if you notice, this last shoot has no really in focus area so we cannot really judge of its sharpness. There also artefacts that come from the lens weaknesses that are are made more visible by the post processing.

Don't be fooled, at f/2.8 DA50 is already quite decent and the lens overall is very nice... But if you want to really leverage the f/1.8 or f/2 the DA50 can be disapointing depending on the shoot.

I have a few 50s and the only one that gets close to how much the subject "pops out" of the picture, is my Sears 50mm f2. The M 50 1.7 can't get this, though it is a good lens. I'm not that knowledgeable on these things but it kind of seems like the microcontrast of the DA 50 1.8 at f4 and smaller, is unrivaled by other 50s except very expensive ones like the DA*55. And I had already noticed this in pictures you had posted previously in your flickr account, which of course I do follow

But I don't have a DA50 I do have an FA50 through (both lens are quite similar optically) but didn't use it much since I got the FA77 Maybe that some FA77 shoots you are thinking of ?

Ah sorry, confusion on my part. I do follow your flickr, but I thought I was replying to mtux! It's his DA 50 1.8 that gives those extraordinary results.

I mean, look at the first picture in this page. That is just incredible IQ, and it has to do with more than just sharpness.

I would say it is more the photographer than the lens. I do not say the lens is bad, this is by far no true, but mtux know what he is doing

Playing with the SMC-A 70-210 f4 Macro and bokeh bubbles...

Also more traditional bokeh. All pictures in this post are of course wide open...

I like them

Here's some water bokeh with Sigma 35mm @ f/3.2, don't know if it qualifies for bokeh even.

Yeah having a small white christmas tree with colored lights next to the big "normal" christmas tree opened up some possibilities I just couldn't pass on

That first picture was taken at 1/13s handheld and 70mm. Not pin sharp but you gotta love IBIS!
