Bokeh from a "Junk" Lens

Among the four Pentax lenses I got for Cdn $80 were a gem (SMC Pentax M 28mm f/3.5) and a supposed "junk" lens (non-SMC Pentax A 28-80mm f/3.5-4.5). The reviews for the latter were for the most part unfavourable, including a comment from someone, who said he would not take it even if he was offered money. So I had it in my to-give-away box. But then I decided to give it a try. Wow! Its accurate colour rendition and painterly bokeh just blew me away!

From the Legendary Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4

I had this radioactive lens for a song, together with another normal lens, Super Multi Coated Takumar 55mm f/1.8. I was supposed to let it sit in the sun to rid it of the yellowing. Unfortunately, I could not wait to test its bokeh making capability. (Hence, the yellowish tinge to the picture.) See for yourself why this lens deserves such a reputation. By the way, this was taken wide open.

Bokeh from the Equally Capable Super Multi Coated Takumar 55mm f/1.4

This is from the Super Multi Coated Takumar 55mm lens f/1.8 that plays second fiddle to the legendary Super Takumar/Super Multi Coated/SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4. Honestly, the bokeh from this lens of lesser pedigree is equally amazing. By the way this was taken wide open and the bokeh has been unretouched.

The Unmistakable Bokeh Queen Among My Normal Lenses

This is how my Auto Takumar 55mm f/2.0 renders bokeh wide open. Creamy ... ethereal ... super smooth ... dreamy. I can't find the right words. It clearly beats my other normal lenses (SMC Pentax M 50mm f/1.7, SMC Pentax A 50mm f/1.7, Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4, and Super Multi Coated Takumar 55mm f/1.8). This puny Auto Takumar's secret? Its ten-bladed diaphragm. I don't have any other Pentax or Takumar lens with that many blades.

Very nice image & TFS.

I have two Auto Tak 55/2.2 and would like to try the f/2 to see the difference, if any ... maybe I should sell a f/2.2 to finance the acquisition, but I cannot bring myself to parting with one.

I don't agree that any of the Takumar 55 f/1.8s have a lesser pedigree. It's one of my favorites. Can't wait to try it on the new FF Pentax (rented of course!).

[/COLOR]Thank you everyone for all the kind words! I love doing portraiture so much.

Here's a few from the sigma 18-35mm f/1.8

that 18mm bokeh though... Love that lens! Wish they could put those specs on a full frame lens somehow.

Love the Auto-Taks, I've got a few 55/1.8s and a 55/2.2 all really class.
