The second (stopped down) one. The background is still smooth, but gives context without being as distracting in my opinion.
That was my opinion when I saw the difference looking back through old images, (and deleting a lot of trash,) I thought that the buildings being a bit more recognizable helped. I am not saying it is a good image but I love playing with my FA 77.

My opinion too. The context trumps in this case.

I want to state again the bokeh is better in the first. The context of buildings makes the second better. Exclude the buildings and number one wins hands down. Thus we are talking too different points. Like all of photography it is a compromise in this case abstraction -detail vs smoothness.

I would say the bokeh is blurrier in the first - that does not necessarily make it better. In the second the bokeh serves the subject rather than distracts from it. We have to remember what the photograph is OF.

Of course, this opinion is entirely subjective

Bokeh or blurryness shouldn't be self purpose. So IMO everything depends on what you as the photographer intended to show.

Other posters already stated they would prefer the second image because it shows the context more clearly. I also feel that the context is important here. So my favorite also is umber 2. If the out of focus areas in this image would distract somehow I guess I'd prefer the first.

Anecdote that reveals something interesting about fruit bats. Disney's Animal Kingdom has fruit bats on display. You enter and leave a shelter through double doors. One side of the building has a viewing area that extends the entire length of the building, all other walls are solid = no windows. The bats are outside, their enclosure is walled in all around and covered by netting at the top that allows sunlight & air to circulate freely. There is NO BARRIER WHATEVER between the bats and the visitor view area. - no glass, no bars, no fence, no netting. Apparently the bats will not enter a dark enclosure or space, the viewing area perhaps looking to them like a large cave. Considering the behavior of Microchiroptera, nocturnal and forming colonies of ten million or more in deep caves, the Megachiroptera behavior is about as diametrically opposite as it could be.

My two cents. For me the bokeh in the first image is so blurry as to be a distraction. The 2nd image is more pleasing to look at. Something else the 2nd image has going for it is that there is no reflection of light from the wet road between the chicken and the building. Makes a difference.
