Sears (Ricoh) 50mm F2.0

I just acquired an lens from my youth of which I had fond memories, the Sears (Ricoh) 50mm F2.0. Thousands of this inexpensive, mostly plastic lens were sold with Sears KS series cameras during the early to mid 1980's . Even though it's not multi coated the lens has a reputation of having wonderful, creamy bokeh and a nice IQ for portraits. My original copy of this lens suffered a failure of the glue holding the internals together and it basically fell apart. No matter, as I'd moved up to a Pentax 50mm F1.5 SMC-M.

Looking back at my old photos taken with the Sears 50mm F2.0 and three Pentax 50mm's I've owned/own the old Sears lens had a much better bokeh between f2 and f5.6. I've attached a B&W photo of my dad taken back in 1982 with my first Sears 50mm F2 and my Sears KSX on Kodak Tri-X. Wide open at 1/60th. The scan of this negative doesn't do it justice-I used a $79 Wolverine scanner.

Two days ago I got another Sears 50mm F2.0 as part of a $30 camera kit. The attached photo is a test shot of a plastic JFK-JFK, Jr.statue. Illuminated by a desk lamp. The is lens on my K-30 with aperture block failure. Wide open at F2.0 at minimum focusing distance. LOVE the Bokeh and can't wait to use this little gem more.

Nice effect. Is that a soft lens?

Sears 135mm F2.8 Macro on Pentax K-30

Tuesday I added a 1980's vintage Sears RK/PKA mount 135mm F2.8 with Macro Zone (Samyang-Korea) lens to my collection for the Princely sum of $15. I'd read reviews on this lens, some said it was a terrible 1970's soft focus design, others that it was OK, except for macro. One review pointed out the "aura" this lens could produce. My test shots yesterday proved that my copy can indeed produce an aura around out of focus highlights in macro mode. The light was a bit flat, however color rendition is spot on.The sky in the barn photo was a really deep blue because of an approaching storm. These images were cropped, sharpened and had the highlights brought up to correct levels in PP. The EXIF data lists focal length as 50mm because I didn't reset after using a Sears 50mm F2.0 earlier. For $15-the lens is a definite keeper.
